At this time of year holiday planning can get hectic and this past week we celebrated a birthday with great friends. To lessen stress we decided to wine and dine in! A late dinner with Pelee Island wine, a quick appetizer, and gorgeous steaks from The Butcher of Kingsville were just the combination to relish in food, health and friendship!

We devoured the Canadian Atlantic sugar and spice salmon barbecued on a cedar plank with Alvar Chardonnay Gewurztraminer 2011 as our appetizer. We have paired this salmon previously with a red and enjoyed it equally with this white! The steaks were also barbecued with only a Montreal spice and served with Alvar Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2010.

Wine Description

At the beginning of the 20th century, grape growing was already well-established on Pelee Island. With the Vin Villa Vineyards (1865) in active production and the construction of the White House by Captain J.S. Hamilton in 1891, the new century began with a vibrant wine making spirit on the island.

Food Recommendations:

Smooth and rich, this enticing red resounds with the presence of cassis, wild cherry and spices. Structured tannins enhance the flavours as well as provide a smooth lingering finish.

Alvars comprise a small percentage of the Earth’s ecosystems by land extent; although some 120 exist in the Great Lakes region, they comprise only 0.2% of the land area there. They provide a natural habitat for many rare birds, butterflies, plants and trees. The hop tree is one of them. A rare tree found in such Alvars along the shores of Lake Erie.

This crisp balanced wine opens with the fresh flavours of lychee and mandarin oranges; the citrus influence continues with an intense tangerine flavour; the presence of Gewurztraminer complements the wine with a closing note of spice.

Ideal with seafood and grilled meats.
